We offer a diverse selection of licensures. You can add licenses in various areas, including ENL/ESL, Educational Leadership, Gifted and Talented, Reading Teacher, and Special Education. Our programs provide the required coursework to prepare to pass the state-required exams.

Educational Leadership license

Are you ready to advance your leadership skills and earning power? The Educational Leadership Program at IU Southeast prepares educators for school administration roles by offering a principal licensure program consisting of 10 courses for 30 credit hours. While it is a licensure program, not a degree program, it can fulfill Rank 1 or Plus 30 requirements and be used as a concentration for a master's degree in elementary or secondary education. Candidates who must have a master’s degree and pass the state exam can begin their coursework in the spring, summer, or fall semester.

Candidates must complete the following courses and meet the program requirements as required by Indiana and Kentucky, if applicable.

All candidates must:

  • Be admitted to the Educational Leadership Program at IU Southeast.
  • Hold a valid classroom teaching license.

Attention Kentucky candidates: All coursework must be post-master's.

  1. Attend a program group advising session, meet with an Educational Leadership program faculty member, or have a telephone advising meeting with an Educational Leadership program faculty member.
  2. Complete the online application. A $40 application fee is assessed when applying to the program. If a previous application fee was paid, the fee should be waived. To determine if the fee is to be waived, contact our Records Specialist, listed in the Contacts and Advising section below.
  3. On the Uploads tab, upload an essay that explains why you want to be a building-level administrator, how you have impacted student learning, and how you have served as a school leader.
  4. Three letters of recommendation that address your leadership skills must be submitted. One must be from a current or recent supervisor. Use the Recommendation tab on the online application to request electronically. If desired, letters may be mailed directly to the Records Specialist.
  5. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A minimum 3.0 GPA must be reflected on all transcripts.
  6. Also on the Uploads tab, upload a copy of current teaching license. (Emergency license and statement of eligibility are not acceptable.)
  7. Applications are due at least 10 days prior to the beginning of the summer, fall, or spring term.
  8. A500 Introduction to Educational Leadership must be taken as one of the first courses. It is offered each term. Contact Dr. Robin Fankhauser (WE SHOULD PUT THE TITLE HERE), listed in the Contacts and Advising section, for more information.

Important information:

  • Indiana applicants must hold a master’s degree or be enrolled in the M.S.Ed. program at IU Southeast.
  • Kentucky applicants must hold a master’s degree to be considered for acceptance. Kentucky candidates may apply hours toward a Rank I upon completion of the program.

A two-year gap in coursework will require a new application for re-admission into any graduate program and a mandatory meeting with a program advisor. The re-admitted candidate must then comply with any new program requirements, if any.

ENL/ESL license

Are you ready to expand your impact in today's diverse classroom? Our English as a New Language/English as a Second Language license equips educators to understand and leverage their students' cultural and linguistic diversity. The program offers high-quality training to advance the educational prospects of English learners, with licensure available after completing 15 credit hours and passing state exams. This program can also be used as a concentration for a Master's in Elementary or Secondary Education, or for a Plus 30 (Indiana) or Rank 1 program (Kentucky). Current Indiana teachers may apply for Indiana Teachers of English Learners Licensure (I-TELL) funding for full financial support.

All courses are 3 credit hours unless otherwise noted.

For an ENL/ESL license in Indiana, candidates must complete 15 credit hours of required coursework.

In addition to the required courses for the Indiana teaching licensure, those seeking Rank 1 in Kentucky must take 3 additional courses from the following options (9 credit hours). Teachers must be licensed in Indiana before adding endorsement to Kentucky license.

The ENL/ESL License Program features a rolling application process.

  3. You will choose Graduate Additional License in ENL, or if you wish to pursue your Master of Science, choose Elementary or Secondary with an ENL Concentration. Learn more about the MS program.
  4. For your personal statement please state why you wish to join this program.
  5. Complete the online self-evaluation survey.
  6. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A 2.5 GPA for all undergraduate coursework, 3.0 GPA for all graduate coursework must be reflected on all transcripts. Mail these to the address below. Many universities also have an online delivery of transcripts. Those can be sent to this email: tstracen@iu.edu.
  7. Also please send a copy of your current teaching license or state of eligibility. (Emergency license may be accepted for courses toward a permanent license, but please communicate with Dr. Bernedo to be sure.)

All candidates pursuing the M.S.Ed. Degree with a concentration in ENL/ESL or a stand-alone ENL/ESL license must meet with Dr. Kelli Bernedo, the program coordinator. Contact Dr. Bernedo to schedule an advising session. This can be conducted via email, Zoom, or an in-person meeting. The goal is to ensure that your goals and the program are a match and to ensure that we can meet your needs.

Candidates getting ready to finalize the program and need clinical placements for EDUC-M 501 (the ENL/ESL Practicum) must contact Dr. Kelli Bernedo for clinical placement, pre-requisites, registration in M501, and placements.

Gifted and Talented license

Are you ready to move ahead in your career and receive a salary boost while helping students with special gifts? Our Gifted and Talented license gives teachers the specialized credential they need to address the unique needs and abilities of this student population.

All courses are 3 credit hours unless otherwise noted.

The Gifted and Talented Education license at IU Southeast offers interested candidates a program of coursework toward an Indiana K-12 High Ability / Gifted and Talented certification. The program requires 12 credit hours of coursework.

Reading Teacher license

Are you ready to advance your career with a certification in reading? Our Reading Teacher license provides teachers with specialized skills to excel in the classroom or as a reading coach. The program requires 24 credit hours and can be part of the M.S.Ed. program or fulfill Rank I/+30 requirements. All applicants must hold a valid elementary, junior high/middle school, or secondary license. Note that a two-year gap in coursework necessitates a new application for re-admission and a mandatory meeting with a program advisor, with compliance to any new program requirements. *Several of the literacy courses have assessment assignments/writing requirements for the program embedded in the course syllabi. Therefore, if petitioning to get credit for a course with an embedded assessment requirement, the student must submit the assessment piece(s) to meet the license program requirements. This holds true for transfer credits, as well. Courses that possess an assessment assignment/writing requirement are noted above with an asterisk*. Special Education license

Are you ready to acquire skills needed to make a difference in the lives of students with disabilities and their families? Our licensure program in special education gives you the foundational and field-intrinsic knowledge you need in a systematic format combined with exposure to classroom practice.

Students complete 27 credit hours of graduate-level coursework that reflects a comprehensive approach to building skills to address the scholastic needs of students with mental, emotional, learning and other differences or disabilities.

Students must have a current/valid teaching license.

All courses are 3 credit hours and require a grade of a B or better unless otherwise noted.
