The Elementary Transition to Teaching program at Indiana University Southeast offers an affordable and efficient pathway for you to use your bachelor’s degree in another field to become a licensed elementary school teacher.

This program is designed to cater to career-changers who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young students.

IU Southeast’s program emphasizes hands-on learning through in-school clinical placements. These placements provide practical teaching experience in real classroom settings, allowing you to apply your theoretical knowledge under the guidance of experienced educators.

Comprehensive curriculum providing through preparation

The curriculum of the Elementary Transition to Teaching program at IUS covers essential teaching skills and subject-specific knowledge necessary for effective teaching.

You'll engage in coursework that includes child development, instructional strategies, classroom management, and curriculum design.

This comprehensive training ensures that you'll be equipped with the tools and confidence needed to excel as an elementary educator.

Add licensing options

Additional licenses in other content areas can be pursued concurrently but will only be awarded after receiving the initial license in the main content area, completing the required coursework, and passing the state-required exam.

Program requirements

The in-person Elementary Transition to Teaching program requires 18 credit hours (30 if taken to the master's level) and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

All courses are 3 credit hours and require a grade of B or better unless otherwise noted. 

The Elementary Transition to Teaching licensure program is a 24-credit program that includes the following sequence of courses.

Required courses

  • EDUC-M 500**—Professional Seminar* (1 credit hour)
  • EDUC-E 535—Elementary School Curriculum

*Professional Seminar sessions:

  • Foundations of American Education
  • Educational Psychology
  • Children's Literature
  • Child Development

**EDUC500 courses are one (1) credit-hour courses that include both school teaching experiences and professional seminars. These courses provide additional instruction and information in specialized areas such as early childhood, classroom management, diagnostic reading, and special areas. Elementary Education Transition to Teaching candidates will be assessed an additional $1,000 fee over and above the regular tuition for each of the three M500 courses. The additional fee supports paying for teacher mentors, cooperating teachers, and program administration. This fee is set by the IU Board of Trustees and is subject to change. Candidates are advised to consult with the Elementary Transition to Teaching Coordinator and the Office of the Bursar for the updated fee.

  • EDUC-N 523—Elementary Mathematics Methods

  • EDUC-E 513—Elementary Social Studies (2 credit hours)
  • EDUC-K 505—Introduction to Special Education for Graduate Students*

  • EDUC-E 515—Elementary Reading: Diagnostic and Prescriptive Reading (1 credit hour)
  • EDUC-E 516—Elementary Science Methods
