Kentucky Licensing Renewal Requirements

Renewing your Kentucky teaching license

The IU Southeast School of Education offers coursework required for teachers to renew and/or enhance their license.

Courses may be taken that will fulfill both Indiana and Kentucky requirements for license renewal.

Applying for Kentucky license renewal

  • Kentucky teachers may receive a rank change with a total of 30 or more graduate credit hours (Rank II) or 60 or more graduate credit hours (Rank I) with completion of a master's degree or a licensing program. Candidates must complete a Rank I licensure program (Computer Education, Educational Leadership, ESL/ENL, Gifted and Talented, or Reading) to meet the Rank I requirement of 60 or more graduate credit hours.
  • An Indiana license may be required prior to adding an endorsement to a Kentucky license.
  • Complete any PRAXIS test requirements, which can be found on the ETS website. If you have tested outside of Kentucky, select the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (code 7283) to have ETS electronically submit your scores to the Kentucky EPSB. Tests taken in Kentucky should automatically be reported to the EPSB.
  • Submit official paper transcripts for license renewal and/or rank change applications. OE Transcripts with grades are usually available about two weeks after the end of each term (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2). (While some courses are finished in late July, grades will not be posted until mid-August.) Degrees are awarded three times each year: 5/31, 8/31, and 1/15. The conferral dates on the transcripts will be earlier and vary slightly year to year.
  • Upload a valid CPR card from an IDOE-approved provider.
  • An Out-of-State Prepared Educator Candidate Recommendation form, signed by the IU Southeast Licensing Advisor, is required with submission of the application.
  • Submit your application. (A fee is required to submit an application.)
