An Indiana University Southeast internship is an educational experience related to a student’s degree program and career plan which allows the student to apply what he/she has learned to real work situations. An internship involves a student, an employer supervisor and a sponsor of the university.

To Qualify for the Internship Program:

  • Must be an enrolled IU Southeast student
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, with the exception of Informatics majors (3.0 GPA)
  • Have completed a minimum of 45 credit hours, or have attained second-semester Sophomore status, with the exception of Informatics majors (at least junior status) and Business majors (at least 30 credit hours, with a minimum of 6 hours taken from the IUS School of Business)

Internship Program Guidelines

An internship may be a paid or unpaid experience and a student may earn from zero to six academic credit hours (depending on the number of hours worked). It is necessary for the internship to be registered through Career Development Center for it to appear on the student’s transcript.

To be eligible for academic credit, internships must meet the following requirements:

  • Approximately 14 weeks in length – dates do not have to coincide with the semester dates
  • Credit must be on-going and cannot be retroactive
  • Internship credit hours are subject to current tuition rates
  • Consult with an advisor to determine what degree requirements internship credit will fulfill
  • Credit hours are determined by the total hours worked during the internship, see table below:

  • Your current position or internship may qualify if it is a new position or recent promotion, you are working on a special project, or you have recently taken on new responsibilities.
  • Your internship must be related to your major and/or your future career plans.
  • The position cannot be more than 30% clerical.
  • The number of internship credit hours earned is based on the number of work hours devoted per week to the new project/position/job duties.
