Teaching with Technology

Technology Tool Finder

The Technology Tool Finder was designed to provide faculty with a one-stop portal for IU-supported teaching and learning technologies.

Piloting New Technologies

As students evolve, so do the systems and tools that shape the way we engage, educate, and inspire them. That's where Next.IU comes in. The pilot program goes beyond the latest trends to discover which technologies best serve IU's needs for education in the traditional classroom and flipped, hybrid, and fully-online learning environments.

Student Engagement

Box Course Folders

Box Course Folders, a locally developed tool available in Canvas, integrates Canvas with the IU Box service. The tool enables sharing and collaboration in the following ways:

  • When the tool is launched for the first time, a set of folders is created for the class.
  • Instructors can use the folders to share files with other instructors or the entire class.
  • The folders can also be configured to allow users in other roles to upload files and collaborate on content. Instructors can create personal drop box folders for all students in the course. Drop box folders allow file sharing and collaboration between student and instructor.
  • Any course member, regardless of role, can invite the entire class or members of their own role-based groups to collaborate on a personal Box folder.

Nota Bene (nb)

NB is short for Nota Bene. It is a website that lets people digitally mark up PDF documents as a group. It is especially helpful if you want students to annotate a scholarly journal article or similar work. NB is created by programmers at MIT who research its use.

Piazza

Piazza is an online problem-solving place where students can ask, answer, and explore questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, under the guidance of their instructors. In Piazza, students collaborate in a wiki-like interface to come up with answers to questions that may be posed by students or instructors. Instructors can also collaborate on answers in their own space. In addition, Piazza offers a more traditional discussion format.

Piazza updates continuously, so students (and instructors) can stay connected and keep track of the activity around a particular question. Mobile apps are available for both iOS and Android devices. Piazza also supports the editing of computer code, and has a built-in LaTeX editor for equations.

At Indiana University, the Piazza tool allows integration of Piazza in Canvas.

Canvas Native Recording Tool

Instructors can use the Rich Content Editor to record a video. they can record media for any length of time, but shorter video recordings are recommended. Longer media lengths require a longer rendering time and may be interrupted without a stable internet connection.
