Our History
The Institute for Learning and Teaching Excellence was founded in 1997 through a Strategic Directions grant initiative. It was one of the first teaching and learning centers on a regional campus within the Indiana University family. Now there are centers on all five regional and two core campuses.
The ILTE began with a half-time faculty director, one full-time employee and two part-time employees, with space in the old Library building. When the current IU Southeast library was constructed in 2005, the ILTE was invited to move to the newest building on campus. ILTE has been housed on the main floor of the library ever since.
Over time, the role of ILTE on the campus has grown exponentially. In 2015, a full-time director was hired along with a full-time administrative and technical assistant. In 2020, the Academic Media Production Space opened. This Media Space allows ILTE consultants to work with faculty to create and produce professional quality videos to assist student learning.
