At IU Southeast, we work hard to make the transition for international students as easy as possible.
International students include students who require a visa to be in the United States (visa students) as well as students who do not require a visa but may have completed some or all of their education in a country outside of the United States (non-visa students). Please see the appropriate status in the drop-down menu below for instructions on how to apply.
Admission requirements
In this section you will find the admissions requirements for international students.
Freshman applicants must meet the following criteria for full admission:
- Core 40 or Core 40 with Honors or Technical Honors (or 28 college preparatory high school courses for non-Indiana residents and those graduating prior to 2011)
- At least a 2.0 GPA
Transfer students must meet the following criteria for admission:
- Submission of official transcripts from all previously attended colleges (individual transcripts from each institution)
- Cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale
Applicants that have earned less than 26 hours of college credit are expected to meet the freshman admission standards.

Admission requirements for visa students
This section is for students who need a visa to study in the United States or are currently residing in the U.S. on a visa.
All students who require a visa to study in the United States, or who are already in the United States on a visa, must complete IU Southeast's international application for admission. Applications are filed alphabetically under the family name you list on the application form. All of your forms, records, and correspondence must use the same name and spelling.
How to apply for admissions
Undergraduate students
Undergraduate students should complete the following items:
- Complete the application for admission
- Submit a non-refundable US $65.00 application fee.
- Provide official academic records for all secondary and post-secondary work as well as provide an official, exact (literal) English translation, if the official language on the records is not English.
- Submit proof of English proficiency (see English proficiency link below).
- Provide financial documentation.
Financial documentation
U.S. immigration regulations require international students to show that they have enough funds to pay for educational and living expenses for a 12-month period. Proof of financial support can be an official letter or statement of account(s) from your bank. If you receive financial support from another individual, they must provide a financial statement showing adequate funds. If you receive funding from a corporate or government sponsor, the sponsor must supply a letter of financial support. Your full name should be included in any letter of financial support. English proficiency
All nonnative English-speaking applicants who require a visa to be in the U.S. are required to demonstrate English proficiency.
IU Southeast accepts the following as proof of English proficiency:
English proficiency test standards:
- A score of 530 or higher on the paper version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- A score of 197 or higher on the computer-based TOEFL
- A score of 75 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL
- A score of 6 or better on the IELTS
- A score of 85 or better on the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency
- A score of 95 or higher on the Duolingo English Test (DET)
- SAT I Critical Reading score (Pre-March 2016): 450 or higher or the equivalency on the new evidence-based reading and writing section
ESL program standards:
- Successful completion of the Intensive English Program at the Center for English Language Training at IU in Bloomington, Indiana
- Successful completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Jefferson Community College in Louisville, Kentucky
- Successful completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at a regionally accredited institution in the United States
- Successful completion of the Intensive English Program at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky
- Successful completion of Level 112 at ELS Language Centers
Additional competency evidence:
- Graduation from a U.S. high school
- Graduation from a secondary school in which English was the primary language of instruction as verified by the school’s web site or by a school official
- A C or above in a college-level English class from a U.S. college or university
- The equivalent of a C or above in a college-level English class from a college or university in which English was the primary language of instruction as verified by the school’s web site or by a school official
- A bachelor's or higher degree from a country designated as predominantly native-English speaking (List compiled with IUB and IUPUI as guides.)
- Successful completion of 26 or more credit hours with a U.S. post-secondary institution, including the completion of a 100-level (or above) English composition class
- Students who have graduated from high school, successfully completed university-level course work, or are citizens of a country in which English is considered the native language are exempt from the English proficiency documentation requirement.

This section is for students who are permanent residents, refugee or political asylees.
Application information and requirements
Indiana University Southeast is a branch campus of Indiana University. All items submitted as part of the application become the property of Indiana University and cannot be returned. Applications are filed alphabetically under the family name you list on the application form. All of your forms, records, and correspondence must use the same name and spelling.
