Dean's Message
Welcome to Social Sciences!
The social sciences are fields of study that address human social institutions and behavior. The biggest concerns of our time—addiction, racial injustice, mass incarceration, global pandemics, mental illness, war, environmental disasters brought on by shifts in the global climate—are topics that we focus on in the social sciences. If you want to learn more about how people act, the social sciences are a great place to start!
The School of Social Sciences at IU Southeast is a great place to learn because we are dedicated to supporting student success. The faculty teaching our classes care about their students, and use innovative teaching practices. In a political science class, students might learn about the development of political ideologies by acting as historical figures from the French Revolution. In a criminal justice class, students may research a faculty-created crime scene. Students can learn new approaches to caring for the elderly through a study abroad trip to Sweden, accompanied by expert faculty. In addition to classroom experiences, our faculty sponsor student internships where students can earn college credit while making career connections and learning career skills first-hand. Our neuroscience program gives students opportunities to work in a laboratory to apply methods they learn in classes. These experiences ensure that our graduates are prepared for employment after graduation.
Our school also prides itself on supporting development in our local community. Our faculty and students volunteer at white flag homeless shelters, organize free events centered on increasing awareness of mental health concerns and treatment, and serve on important community groups such as the New Albany Human Rights Commission and The Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.
The School of Social Sciences offers eight undergraduate majors, ten minors, and both online and in-person graduate programs to support the educational needs of all students. With our wide range of courses and degrees, we are here to help you achieve your career and educational goals.
If you have questions about our programs, or ideas to share and discuss with us, please call us at (812) 941-2391 or contact us via email at sesocs1@iu.edu.
