Diversity and Intercultural Competency
The Certificate in Diversity and Intercultural Competency prepares students to be familiar with the different types of diversity as well as the contexts and theories related to diversity. Diversity is defined differently according to one’s own perspective, and this certificate prepares students for negotiating diverse cultures and identities in different fields of study. The certificate also enables students to understand the impact of diversity in local, national and international contexts.
Required Courses
Students are required to complete 18 credit hours with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0, including:
- At least nine hours must be completed at the 300-level or above.
- Six credit hours must be taken in the humanities (AFRO, ANTH, ENG, FINA, FREN, HIST, PHIL, REL, or SPAN)
- Six credit hours must be taken in the social sciences (CJUS, EDUC, POLS, PSY, or SOC).
- Coursework toward the certificate must cover at least three of the following areas: sex and gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, religion, age/generation, nationality or class.
Admission Process
Freshman applicants must meet the following criteria for full admission:
- Core 40 or Core 40 with Honors or Technical Honors (or 28 college preparatory high school courses for non-Indiana residents and those graduating prior to 2011).
- At least a 2.0 GPA.
Scores from either the SAT or ACT are required for those applicants who graduated from high school within the past two years - or who completed a GED and are 19 years of age or younger. Students who have been out of high school for over two years and do not meet the minimum requirements listed for traditional students may be asked to arrange for an interview with an admissions counselor to demonstrate intention through maturity and experience. Standards based on SAT totals from Critical Reading and Math sections.
Transfer Students:
- Must submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges (individual transcripts from each institution).
- Must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.
- Applicants that have earned less than 26 hours of college credit are expected to meet the Freshman Admission Standards.
Post-Bac Students:
- Baccalaureate degree.
- Must submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges (individual transcripts from each institution).
- Must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.
