Meet Sharon Jecker

Sharon Jecker

Registered Nurse at Norton Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Floyds Knobs, IN

Degrees received from IU Southeast
Nursing, 2018

Like many nursing students, Sharon chose IU Southeast for its location and reputation for having one of the best nursing programs in the area. Known for its outstanding faculty, curriculum and clinical experience, Sharon took advantage of supplemental instruction sessions and became involved in the Student Nurses Association as co-president. In that role, she helped host health fairs with the Amish in Washington County and provided health teaching to the Native Americans in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Those experiences helped Sharon grow into a culturally competent nurse, working with diverse populations.

Three months before graduation, Sharon accepted her "dream job" as a registered nurse at Norton Children's Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She is now considering furthering her education by pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice in the coming years.

Meet Kaitlin Staschke

Kaitlin Staschke

Third Grade Teacher at Austin Elementary School

Austin, IN

Degrees received from IU Southeast
Elementary Education, 2018

Kaitlin came to IU Southeast looking for a home away from home. Coming from a small rural community, she wanted personalized attention, professors who knew her and the opportunity to live at home and stay involved in her siblings' lives. IU Southeast was that and more. When Kaitlin needed math tutoring to be accepted into her elementary education program, it was there. Better yet, it was free and located conveniently down the hall from her math class. Her teachers mentored and coached but set high expectations. She learned early on that she was not just working with children, but also with parents. Her professors helped her develop professional skills for all situations that might arise throughout her career.

Before beginning her student teaching experience, Kaitlin was invited to co-teach clinical blocks. She learned to become an effective teacher, planning and taking charge of some lessons all while under the tutelage of her clinical teacher.

Now Kaitlin is teaching eighteen amazing and bright third graders in her hometown elementary school. She plans to continue learning how to become a better educator and to one day become a team leader for her grade and a role model for other young educators.
