Funding Your Studies

There is a variety of scholarships administered by the IU Southeast Office of International Programs

Students must be currently enrolled at IU Southeast and have at least sophomore standing to apply.

• Allmayer-Williams Scholarship (funded by the IU Office of Overseas Study)
  • Undergraduate students on an IU Southeast-based program worth at least 3 credit hours may apply; minimum GPA is: 2.5; typical award amount: $500 - 750
• IU Southeast Overseas Study Scholarships
  • Any student may apply; minimum GPA is 2.8; typical award amount: $100 - $750
• Ed Quinn Memorial Fund Scholarships
  • Any student traveling outside of the Ohio Valley may apply; minimum GPA is: 2.8; typical award amount: $200 - 1500
• Short Term Study Abroad Scholarship (funded by the IU Office of Overseas Study)
  • Students on an IU Southeast-based program worth at least 3 credit hours may apply; minimum GPA is: 2.5; typical award amount: $250 - 750

Scholarship Policies

• Students applying for a scholarship to go on a program in which they have already participated will not be awarded funding. However, this does NOT exclude applicants who want to travel to the same country on a fundamentally different program.
• If a scholarship recipient is unable to complete the proposed study abroad program for any reason other than a documented case of extreme emergency, he or she must repay all funds awarded within 30 days of dismissal or withdrawal from the program. This includes, but is not limited to, early dismissal from a program for academic or behavioral reasons.
• Students who do not receive a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 for the courses taken on the study abroad program must repay the full amount of the scholarship within 30 days of notification of grades.
• Acceptance of this funding obligates students to publicize the opportunities and advantages of overseas study upon their return (such as speaking before a student group or writing an article for the campus paper.)

The IU Southeast Scholarship Committee offers the Lee Hamilton Scholarship. The minimum amount per scholarship is $1,000. The qualifications are:

• The recipient must be a resident of the Indiana Ninth Congressional District or the Kentucky counties served by IUS through the Indiana reciprocity agreement. Counties in Indiana include Brown, Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Monroe, Morgan, Orange, Scott, and Washington. Counties in Kentucky include Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Meade, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble.
• Recipients must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
• Awards are based on some evidence of campus or community service and potential for future leadership.

James W. and Phyllis Robinson International Study Scholarship

It is the intent of the donors, and the Foundation agrees, that income from this gift be used to support undergraduate scholarships for the purpose of encouraging overseas study by students enrolled in the IU Southeast School of Business pursuing study in international business. If no such student is available, students pursuing study in any other business area may be considered. Recipients must participate in an IU-approved credit-bearing, overseas study program as part of an educational experience. The scholarship is not renewable. The number, amount, and recipients of the Scholarship will be determined by the appropriate Scholarship Committee of IU Southeast.

Carlton and Sue Sanders International Study Scholarship

It is the intent of the Donors, and the Foundation agrees, that income from this gift be used to support undergraduate scholarships for the purpose of encouraging overseas study by students pursuing a degree in the IU Southeast School of Business.

Other criteria for the scholarship are listed below:

• Financial need will be considered as demonstrated by the FAFSA.
• Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
• Students must complete 60 hours or have junior status to receive the scholarship.
• Recipients must participate in an IU-approved credit-bearing, overseas study program as part of an educational experience.
• The scholarship is not renewable.
• The number, amount, and recipients of the Scholarship will be determined by the appropriate Scholarship Committee of IU Southeast.

Jerry E. and Sheila R. Wheat International Study Scholarship

It is the intent of the donors, and the Foundation agrees, that income from this gift be used to support undergraduate scholarships for the purpose of encouraging overseas study by students enrolled in the IU Southeast School of Business pursuing study in marketing, or if no such students are available, students pursuing study in management. If no recipient is available in these areas then no scholarship is to be awarded in that year. Recipients must participate in an IU-approved credit-bearing, overseas study program as part of an educational experience, be juniors or seniors, and have a minimum GPA of a 2.9 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship is not renewable. The number, amount, and recipients of the Scholarship will be determined by the appropriate Scholarship Committee of IU Southeast.

Willard and Ruth Findling International Study Scholarship

It is the intent of the donors, and the Foundation agrees, that income from this gift be used to support undergraduate scholarships for the purpose of encouraging overseas study by students of IU Southeast. Recipients must participate in an IU-approved credit-bearing, overseas study program as part of an educational experience. The scholarship is not renewable. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in History and planning for a full-year of overseas study. The number, amount, and recipients of the Scholarship will be determined by the appropriate Scholarship Committee of IU Southeast.

The intent of the CCR Travel Grant is to assist an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at Indiana University Southeast in a cultural experience that involves direct personal interactions within another culture (e.g. homestay, teaching, conference attendance and/or presentation) beyond those of a guided tour. All majors are welcome to apply. Stronger consideration may be given to applicants pursuing education-related careers and those graduate students who have received his or her bachelor's degree within the past two years. The above are guidelines and not absolute restrictions.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

The Gilman Scholarship Program accepts applications two times per year. Ideally, students should begin their application one full semester before their study abroad program is scheduled to begin.

The David Hershberg Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad was established in memory of David Hershberg, a Louisville educator, mentor, and guiding force in the creation and development of the Louisville International Cultural Center (now the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana). Dr. Hershberg was a career faculty member in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages at the University of Louisville and was particularly known for his dedication to student development, mentoring thousands of students over the course of his career. Additionally, Dr. Hershberg served as President of the Board of the Louisville International Cultural Center and as a member of its board of directors until his death in December of 2002.

This annual scholarship awards recipients funds of at least $1,500 to be used to help defray the costs of international travel, lodging, and maintenance for a period of at least 21 days of study or research outside the United States. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of academic merit and by the importance of their proposed study/research abroad experience for their personal, intellectual, and professional career goals.

The scholarship is administered by the World Affairs Council of Kentucky & Southern Indiana, a non-profit member-based organization whose mission is to promote cross-cultural awareness, education and tolerance through nonpartisan discussions on current international issues.
