There are several steps to applying for a nursing license once you complete your education. As you approach your graduation date, follow the steps below to apply for the NCLEX-RN test and your license.
Applying for a nursing license
NCLEX examination process
Step 1
Complete education requirements
Evidence of completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required before graduates may apply to take the National Council State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) NCLEX-RN examination.
Application to take the NCLEX can be completed before graduation, but the Authorization to Test (ATT) is not approved by the Board of Nursing (BoN) in the state where the examination will be taken until the BoN receives notification from the School of Nursing that degree requirements have been fulfilled.
Step 2
Apply for licensure in the state where you want to work as a nurse
You need to have a state-specific license to work as a nurse. Fill out the application for Kentucky or Indiana, or both.
Kentucky
Complete the Kentucky Board of Nursing application for licensure in Kentucky.
Indiana
Complete the Indiana State Board of Licensing application for licensure in Indiana.
Step 3
Study
As you wait to receive your Authorization to Test, begin to study for the NCLEX-RN.
Step 4
Register
Register for the NCLEX-RN once you have received an Authorization to Test. Go to the PearsonVUE website and register to take the examination. Locations of testing sites are also found on PearsonVUE.
Step 5
Test review and final preparation
Once you have received your test date, return to the NCSBN website to review what to do before, during, and after the NCLEX so you will have the best opportunity for passing it the first time.
