Borrowing & Circulation

All library materials circulate except for the following:

• periodicals
• reference works
• archives materials

Non-circulating items may be checked out if approved by a Librarian.

There is no limit to the number of items a user may borrow.

Center for Cultural Resources materials have special circulation policies.

All Indiana University students, faculty, and staff can check out materials using a valid form of identification (e.g. CrimsonCard, state-issued driver's license, passport, etc.). Indiana residents, Kentucky residents living in Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Meade, Oldham, Shelby, Trimble, and Spencer counties, and any student, faculty, or staff at a Metroversity university may apply for a Library Community Borrower's Card.

Except for materials from special collections (such as the Center for Cultural Resources, Course Reserves, and the Library of Things), IU Southeast Library materials may be checked out for the following periods:

• Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students may check out materials for 120 days. (These materials are subject to recall after 2 weeks. If recalled materials become overdue, the user's library circulation privileges, including interlibrary loan, will be suspended system-wide until the overdue recalled materials are returned.)
• Undergraduate Students may have materials for 45 days.
• All other qualified users may check out materials for 30 days.

Except for Center for Cultural Resource items, IU Southeast faculty, staff, and students may renew materials online via IUCAT, by telephone, in person, or by mail. All other users may renew items by telephone, in person, or by mail.

Materials may be renewed an unlimited number of times, unless a Hold has been placed on the item.

Check out materials using your IU identification card (e.g. your CrimsonCard). Indiana residents, Kentucky residents living in Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Meade, Oldham, Shelby, Trimble, and Spencer counties, and any student, faculty, or staff at a Metroversity university may apply for a Library Community Borrower's Card.

The CrimsonCard issued to all IU Southeast students, faculty, and staff, is your library card. Students from other IU campuses may check out materials using their IU identification card. Library community borrower's cards will be issued to non-IU affiliated patrons only (e.g., Indiana and Kentucky residents and Metroversity members).

Borrower's cards will be issued to individuals who have a valid picture ID. Examples of such identification are: a driver's license, a state identification card, an ID from a Metroversity institution, and a high school ID. Borrower's cards will not be issued to patrons younger than age 14. A patron registration form will need to be completed which includes current address, telephone number, and date of birth information.

The first Library Borrower's card is free. Replacement cards are $5.00.

There is no limit on the number of items an individual may borrow.

For standard library materials, the IU Southeast Library does not charge late fees.

Library materials on Course Reserve accrue late fees at the following rates:

2-Hour Closed Reserve
$1.00 per hour every hour past the due date up to $25.00

1-Day, 4-Day, and 7-Day Reserve
$1.00 per day every day past the due date up to $25.00.

If library materials are not returned or renewed within 30 days of their due dates, replacement costs of those items are billed to patrons. Most books and DVDs have a standard replacement cost of $60.00. For more expensive items, especially technology (laptops, tablets, cameras, etc.), patrons are billed the actual cost of the item at the time of purchase.

In most but not all cases, the library will accept replacement copies of lost or damaged books and DVDs. Replacement copies must first be authorized by Access Services. Please contact the Circulation Desk at (812) 941-2485 to speak with someone about this option.

Bills are transferred to Student Central for collection. Indiana and Kentucky residents who are billed for unreturned materials will have borrowing privileges discontinued until materials are returned and fines are paid. Metroversity users who are billed for unreturned materials will have borrowing privileges discontinued at all Metroversity institutions until materials are returned and fines paid. Credits will not be issued for materials returned more than 12 months after the bill has been transferred to Student Central.

Any patron who believes that s/he has been billed in error may file a written appeal. Such appeals must be submitted within 90 calendar days following the due date of the borrowed materials. Appeal forms are available online or at the Service Desk. All legitimate objections related to library charges will be considered. Some examples of reasons which are not considered legitimate objections are: ignorance of library policy, non-receipt of library notices, loaned material to someone else who failed to return it, forgot the due date.
