Student Opportunities

IU Southeast student research assistants enhance their classroom education through applied service learning that both expands their skill set and builds awareness of organizations in surrounding communities. The AREC employs between four and six students year-round as research assistants.

AREC Students:

  • Learn about diverse organizations in our community.
  • Develop professional networks throughout the community.
  • Conduct internet and library research that bridges academic and community-based knowledge and resources.
  • Design, implement and report program evaluations, needs assessments, and issue briefs.
  • Practice professional standards for conducting and participating in team work.
  • Build professional written and oral communication skills.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data collection, management and analysis skills.
  • Expand their use of the tools available in Excel, Power Point, Access and Sharepoint.
  • Utilize basic graphic design tools in Microsoft and Adobe suites.
  • Analyze data using SPSS and GIS.
  • Explore principles of systems modeling and concept mapping to identify leverage points for community change.
  • Learn what it means to be part of group work/team.
  • Experience hands on training.
  • Learn about the need for data to support grant application efforts.
  • Gain friendships that last a lifetime.
