Research Services

Supporting and Empowering Community Organizations

The Applied Research and Education Center is a team of Indiana University Southeast faculty and students that provide research services to the communities of the IU Southeast service region and beyond. The AREC is a nonprofit fee for service entity supported by IU Southeast. Fees support student service learning in the Center and cover research related expenses including travel, administrative costs, supplies, and hardware and software needed to provide service and products.

AREC provides services to:

  • Community-based voluntary associations and organizations.
  • Non-profit agencies and organizations.
  • Individual schools and school corporations.
  • Local businesses.
  • City, county and regional government bodies and agencies.
  • IU Southeast faculty, students and staff.

Diverse Research to Support Resilient Communities

AREC has worked in diverse areas including: public libraries, educational services for immigrant workers, parks and recreation planning, after school programs for at-risk children and youth, low income housing, sustainable community development, healthcare, and community services for the prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.

AREC staff has additional research experience in the areas of higher education affordability, state tax and budget issues, childcare services, domestic violence, charter schools, homelessness, services for the seriously mentally ill and the aging, payday lending, work supports for poor and low-income families, entrepreneurship, rural development, and issues of fossil fuel-based energy and the transition to renewable power.
