Gilbert W. Atnip, Ph.D., 74, of Henryville passed away Tuesday, June 6th, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky.
He was born September 29, 1948 in Tampa, Florida to the late George W. and Evelyn (Holtzclaw) Atnip.
He was an honors graduate of Stetson University and received his masters and doctorate degrees in experimental psychology from Ohio State University and served as an officer in the US Army Reserve for six years. He began his professional career as a professor of psychology at Indiana University Southeast in 1975 and served as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs until his retirement in 2012. In retirement, he fulfilled a long-time wish to live on a golf course (Champions Point) and enjoyed reading, dining out, playing golf and bridge with his wife Carol, and traveling with her in the U.S. and abroad.
Survived by: his wife Carol Ann (Lemmond ) Atnip; son, Richard G. Atnip; daughter, Allison Atnip, Ph.D. (James Stone); his brother, Dr. Robert Atnip M.D. (Chantal) and nieces Lindsay Atnip, Ph.D. and Dr. Elizabeth Atnip Olson, M.D. (Josh).
He was preceded in death by his parents and his uncle and aunt Jack and Dorothy Holtzclaw.
Visitation will be from 11 AM to 1 PM Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the Market St. Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 1 PM Saturday in the Market Street Chapel.
