After taking the ALEKS assessment a $20.00 fee will be applied to the student’s Bursar account. The fee covers all ALEKS attempts and all of the learning modules.

The ALEKS Math Assessment identifies the strengths and weaknesses of your mathematical knowledge, reports its findings, and then provides you with learning modules to ensure your readiness for math courses at IU Southeast. Since math courses are demanding, it is important for you to begin in the course most likely to lead to success. Students will not be permitted to take certain courses unless they have demonstrated readiness. After completing the first ALEKS assessment, students who wish to improve their skills may use the ALEKS learning modules.

Who must take ALEKS?

Students with the listed majors and without transfer credit math courses must take the ALEKS assessment. The assessment is NOT required for any other majors. Transfer credit courses are primarily, but are not solely limited to, transferred math courses, dual-credit math courses, and passing scores for AP math exams.

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Clinical Lab Science
  • Computer Science
  • Elementary Education
  • Geosciences – Geology
  • Informatics – Chemistry Cognate
  • Math
  • Physics
  • Secondary Math Education

Students who have transfer or dual-credit math courses should request that their course/grade transcript is sent to the IU Southeast Office of Admissions as soon as possible.

Students may use the ALEKS learning modules to improve their math skills and challenge their assessment by retaking the assessment (up to 4 additional times). They will have an opportunity to use the learning modules after each assessment.

When and Where do students take ALEKS?

Disability Accommodations

This is not a timed test. The assessment will ask up to 30 questions. You may take as long as you need to answer the questions, as long as the assessment is completed within 48 hours of starting.

What you need

  • Your IU Southeast username and passphrase
  • Approximately 90 minutes of time

To setup your account

Go to the Account Management Service (AMS). To create your IU computing account, you must enter your Last Name, Birth Date, and University ID Number. New students can find their ID number on their admissions letter. You can look up your University ID by visiting the Student Self-Service University ID Lookup page.

What to expect

Before you take the assessment, ALEKS will present a short tutorial on how to enter answers, how to use the graphing utilities, and how to use the built-in calculator that will be offered when appropriate. There are no multiple choice questions. TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THIS TUTORIAL AND BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE THESE FEATURES.

Learning Modules and Reassessments

After taking the initial assessment, you will have the opportunity to use the learning modules in ALEKS to refresh and practice specific math topics unique to your results. This will not only help you into your recommended math course, but this will also make you more likely to succeed in that course. You should begin your learning modules immediately following your initial assessment. You will then have six (6) months to use the learning modules and complete up to 4 reassessments.
