Graduate Certificate for District Level Administrators in Urban Settings

The Graduate Certificate for District Level Administrators in Urban Settings is aimed at educational leaders with interest and experience in urban schools and communities. The degree is a complement to the Educational Specialist (Ed.S) degree in Educational Leadership, or other degrees such as the EdD, PhD, or JD.

Students completing the program will be able to demonstrate the following abilities in a field-based setting:

  • Establishing strong leadership skills and the ability to work with students, teachers, staff, and parents of diverse backgrounds in a way that supports learning;
  • Providing effective supervision of curriculum and instruction, student services, and related activities;
  • Building effective community and external relationships;
  • Identifying and using community resources to support student learning;
  • Using technology to manage data, monitor operations, and communicate effectively;
  • Applying knowledge of school law to school administrative and governance activities;
  • Managing school and district resources using effective budgeting principles;
  • Integrating knowledge of local, state, and national political considerations into leadership approach.

In addition to the 24-credit hour curriculum, completion of this certificate requires:

  • A post-Master’s degree, such as the Ed.S, Ed.D, PhD or JD
  • 250-hour field-based practicum, that will be assessed throughout the process. The practicum will take place in the school district where the students is employed, under supervision of a faculty member and an on-site supervisor.
  • A state examination

Admission requirements:

  • Statement of Purpose (750-1000 words)
  • Official transcripts for every college or university attended (Transcripts not required from IU campuses)
  • Two letters of reference/nomination on official letterhead from current administrators (may include vice-principals, principals, and superintendents) addressing applicant’s potential for leadership
  • Licensure information or documentation of minimum two-years teaching experience.
  • Current GRE (completed in past five years)

Students can transfer up to six graduate credit hours into the graduate program with the permission of an advisor. To make satisfactory progress, a student must earn at least a C in all courses and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
