Opportunities for English Students

Much greater than what you might expect from the relatively modest size of the IU regional campus and the local region, the English Department, Indiana University Southeast, and the greater university, Southern Indiana, and Louisville community offer a wealth of opportunities for English majors, minors, and certificate students, as well as other students interested in literature and writing. Click the links below to read more about these opportunities.

Sponsored by the English Department

  • An annual IU Southeast Writing Contest accepts submission in multiple genres, including research and creative writing, independently judged, with cash prizes and recognition for the winners at an annual “Gala” celebration.
  • The annual English Department Gala celebrates the end of the semester with faculty, students, and their families and friends, and also celebrates the winners of the IU Southeast Writing Contest.
  • The IU Southeast Review literary magazine’s content is selected, and the entire publication designed and published, solely by student editorial staff under the oversight of a writing faculty member. Students can submit their writing annually for each new issue, and have the opportunity to apply each year to be on the editorial staff.
  • Two courses in publication and design, ENG-W 364 and ENG-W 398, offer students the opportunity to research, draft, and revise articles that will appear in The Voice, the annual magazine of the School of Arts and Letters, and Transformations, the annual online magazine of the Academy for Diversity and Inclusive Education (ADIE).
  • An annual social where English students and faculty can get to know each other better, and students can ask questions about the major, careers, and advising.
