This year’s election is incredibly important. Voters across the country will choose a president. Voters in Indiana will choose a governor and an attorney general. And there are also races for the U.S. House of Representatives, the state legislature, as well as city and county councils and judgeships. Every vote counts—especially yours!
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
To vote, you must first register. The deadline to register in Indiana and Kentucky is October 7.
If you live in Indiana, go to the Indiana Voter Portal to register to vote. If you think you may already be registered, you can check your status there.
If you live in Kentucky, head to the Kentucky Voter Information Portal to register and/or to check your registration status.
To develop a voting plan, go to the BallotReady website and type in your address. Ballotready will help you find your polling place and show you your ballot beforehand. Plus, the site contains factual information about the candidates on your ballot. You can research the issues and fill out a sample ballot you can take to the polls to remind you of your preferences.
Most voters must vote in person. You can request an absentee ballot only if you have an accepted reason why you cannot vote in person. For information on requesting an absentee ballot, and to see a list of acceptable reasons for voting absentee, visit Indiana’s website for elections.
In Kentucky, too, you must have an acceptable reason to request to vote by mail. All other voters are expected to vote in person. For more information on requesting an absentee ballot, and to see a list of acceptable reasons for voting absentee, visit Kentucky’s website for elections.
Whether you have a schedule conflict or just want to avoid crowds on election day, you can vote early in person in both Indiana and Kentucky, and you don’t need to give a reason.
In Indiana, early in-person voting begins in October 8. Each county has its own early-voting days and times, so use the Voting Information Tool to check them online.
In Kentucky, you can vote early in-person (no excuse absentee) on October 31, November 1, and November 2. Visit the Kentucky State Board of Elections for polling places and times.
Indiana and Kentucky have voter-ID laws. You will need to present a photo ID in order to vote in person.
Your ID must be registered by either the state of Indiana or the US government. So bring your driver’s license, state-issued photo-ID, military ID, or passport if you have one. You can use your Crimson Card, as long as the name listed on it is your legal name, rather than a preferred name.
Acceptable forms of ID include: driver's license, military ID, Kentucky government ID. If you don't have a photo ID, you may obtain a free photo ID card at your circuit clerk's office or one of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's regional offices.
Note: Both states allow you to bring notes and/or sample ballots to help you remember your choices, so take advantage of that.
The last day to register to vote in Indiana and Kentucky is October 7.
