Secondary Transition to Teaching Licensure Program

Do you hold a bachelor's degree in a field other than teacher education but wish to teach in secondary schools?

The Secondary Transition to Teaching licensure program leads to teaching licensure for grades 5-12 in one of the following content areas:

  • Language Arts/English (including Speech)
  • Mathematics
  • Science (Chemistry, Earth/Space, Life Science, Physical Science, and Physics)
  • Social Studies (Economics, Geographical Perspectives, Government and Citizenship, Historical Perspectives, Psychology, and Sociology)
  • Modern World Languages
  • Fine Arts 5-12: Arts Education, Choral or Instrumental (requires passing content exam to enter program and approval of Fine Arts)

Other content areas can be added as additional licenses concurrently but will only be awarded after receiving the initial license in the main content area, completing the required coursework, and passing the state-required exam, including English as a New Language.

Completing the Secondary Transition to Teaching program and passing all required Indiana Department of Education exams will earn candidates an Indiana teaching license.

To earn a complete Master’s Degree in Education

Participants can choose to add four additional courses to complete a master's degree. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Donna Albrecht, at dalbrec@iu.edu for information about the master’s degree courses.

  • EDUC-S 514 Teaching Reading in Secondary (Non-Language Arts Majors Only)

Fall

  • EDUC-M 500 Integrated Professional Seminar - Educational Experiences/Mentoring (1 credit hour)
  • ECUC-P 510 Psychology in Teaching
  • EDUC-S 514 Methods of Teaching Reading in Secondary School (Language Arts Majors Only)

One methods course:

  • EDUC-M 514 Teaching Social Studies
  • EDUC-Q 514 Teaching Science
  • EDUC-N 517 Teaching Mathematics
  • EDUC-S 516 Teaching Language Arts

Spring

  • EDUC-M 500 Integrated Professional Seminar - Leadership Seminar (1 credit hour)
  • EDUC-F 500 Topical Exploration in Ed – Clinical Practice (1 credit hour)

Master’s Degree Completion Option

12 additional hours (Total 30 hours) – B or higher required.

Admission Process

Applicants to the Transition to Teaching post-baccalaureate certificate must satisfy one of the following requirements. This program is 18 preparation hours.

All applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the subject area that the individual intends to teach with a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale; or
  • Graduate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the subject area or related field in which the person wants to teach; or
  • Both a baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the subject area that the individual intends to teach with a grade point average of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 point scale, and five (5) years of professional experience; or
  • Both a baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution, and proof of passing state approved content area examination(s) in the subject area.

Application Process

  1. Attend a program advising session by appointment with the Secondary Transition to Teaching Coordinator or designee.
  2. Complete the online application to Graduate Studies at IU Southeast. A $40 application fee is assessed when applying to program. If a previous application fee was paid the fee should be waived.   3. On the Uploads tab, upload a personal statement that identifies your academic goals, career objectives and why you are applying to this program.
  4. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school.
  5. Review the Credit for Prior Learning webpage and review the process for accepting prior learning/achievement for credit to reduce the hours needed for your license.
