Bachelor of Arts in Individualized Major, Tourism and Hospitality

Begin a career in the growing tourism industry

IU Southeast’s Bachelor of Arts Individualized Major in Tourism, Hospitality, Event Planning, and Sports Management program prepares you for a career in exciting areas of the service industry. You’ll learn how to market and manage tourist facilities and destinations, deliver hospitality services in food and lodging, manage events ranging from industry conventions and professional conferences to rock festivals and arts benefits, and promote athletic teams and sporting events.

Hybrid (Partially In-Person/Partially Online)

This program is a joint venture between IU Bloomington, IUPUI, and IU Southeast; this track uses the resources of all three campuses, giving you the option to take IU Bloomington and IUPUI classes via Eagle-Eye (simultaneously shared classroom), Zoom, or online.

For information specific to you and your situation, meet with your academic advisor and find your ideal pathway to complete your degree on time.

After fulfilling your general education and bachelor’s requirements (60 credits), you’ll complete a 30-credit general core curriculum that includes tourism, hospitality, event planning, and sports management. After completing the core curriculum, you'll choose only two areas of focus from the following for the remaining 30 credits:

  • Hospitality
  • Marketing
  • Sports management
  • Tourism
  • Event planning

Internships are required, and opportunities include both local and out-of-state sites.

Note: in addition to studying the hospitality and travel industry, you may complete a marketing minor as part of the degree if you choose that track.

The Individualized Major with a concentration in tourism, hospitality, sports management, and event planning is designed to meet growing needs in these areas which are such a big part of the Kentuckiana economy and lifestyle.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of lodging managers is expected to grow by 4%, and employment of meeting, convention, and event planners is expected to grow by 11% from 2016 to 2026. Graduates with this bachelor’s degree can expect a starting salary of $45,000 in jobs such as:

  • Festival management

Graduates in this field often pursue advanced degrees in business (MBA), public or nonprofit administration (MPA), and human resource management.
