The IU Trustees Teaching Awards were first given in 2000-2001 to recognize and enhance excellent teaching, especially at the undergraduate level. A monetary sum is attached to the award, and in a typical year, eight faculty members are honored: five in the tenure-track and three who are lecturers.
Recipients have distinguished themselves as educators in the broadest sense during the calendar year, providing excellent and innovative classroom experiences, while also offering students opportunities for further immersion and maintaining their own presence in their fields, such as through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scholarly conferences, in order to inform and enliven their instruction with the most current ideas and practices.
The awards are open to faculty who are primarily involved in teaching, both tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as full-time lecturers and clinical faculty who have not received the award for two years.
In the spring, faculty may self-nominate, and if eligible, may submit to the Improvement of Learning Committee a short dossier for review of their teaching achievements in the prior year. The committee then makes a recommendation to the Chancellor through the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Committee
The Improvement of Learning Committee (IOLC) reviews the submissions and makes recommendations to the Chancellor through the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Specific Guidelines
Faculty self-nominate and submit the requested information to the Improvement of Learning Committee through the Academic Affairs Office on or around February 15. (Since part of the submission is part of the Annual Report faculty submit, the date is slightly flexible to meet that.)
Trustee Teaching Award winners must wait two years to be eligible for another Award (UFC U6-2015, approved 2/24/15); thus, a 2016 award winner is eligible for the 2018 award.
A faculty member’s overall annual teaching load, including summer teaching, must be at least 50% to be eligible for the Trustees’ Teaching Award.
Trustee Teaching Award winners shall serve as possible alternates to review Trustee Teaching Award applications during the one-year period during which they are ineligible for the award.
