Faculty and Staff Biographies

Dr. James Hollenbeck, Professor of Science Education, Coordinator of Secondary Education at Indiana University Southeast,and a 2915 Fulbright Research Chair to Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada. In 2008-2009, he was a  Fulbright Senior Fellow Lecturer/Research at the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. Dr. Hollenbeck has had several articles published in Bulgarian science and science education journals. Dr. Hollenbeck is an author of numerous publications, Environmental Science, Dynamics of Influenza Pandemics, Science, Technology and Society (STS), and Science Education. In Bulgaria, Dr. Hollenbeck taught “Environmental Science” at City University-Bulgaria, ”Finding the Science in Science Fiction” and “Science, Technology and Society” at Sofia University and has lectured at the Varna Medical University and Peter Berone Institute of Education at Schuman University.

At Indiana, Dr. Hollenbeck is the Coordinator of the Science Education Program and teaches “Science, Technology and Society for a Changing World”, ”Environmental Sustainability” and “Science Teaching Methods”. Prior to Indiana, Dr. Hollenbeck taught Biology at Iowa Wesleyan College. Dr. Hollenbeck earned his Ph. D at the University of Iowa. During that time, he has studied Environmental Policy at the School for Environmental Science (University of Nova Gorica) and environmental impact on the Narmada River Valley caused by the Sar Sandar Dam at the University of Roorkee, Roorkee, India, and the Dharminsh Desai Institute of Technology, Naidad, India. Dr. Hollenbeck has conducted ecological succession studies on riverian islands in the upper Mississippi River system.

Since coming to Indiana University Southeast, Dr. Hollenbeck has been an active member of the National Science Teacher's Association (NSTA), serving as an member of several boards and advisory groups, an active member of the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers Incorporated (HASTI), and international projects i.e.: Foundation of Environmental Education for Europe Eco-Schools Project, and the Bulgarian National Science Education Curriculum Revision Committee Science Education Methodology and Curriculum Consultant.

In 2009, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” recognized his work in science education and research in Bulgaria and awarded him the 120 Anniversary Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Medal of Merit, Recognition in Outstanding Achievement in Research in Science Education. As this time he is the only American to be awarded this prestigious award.

2015 Dr. Hollenbeck was awarded a second Fulbright. a Research Chair to Lakehead University, Orillia, Ontario Canada. Conducting research in the "Integration of Information Technology in teaching Environmental Education" and teaching "Environmental Sciences". Dr. Hollenbeck was a guest professor at Shaanxi Normal University in Xi`an China in 2016. The Indiana association of science educators, Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc(HASTI) awarded the Distinguished Award for Innovative College Science Teaching in 2017.
