Computer Education License
Are you ready to advance your knowledge of emerging technology, enhance your students’ success and move ahead in your career? Our Computer Education license prepares teachers to broaden their awareness of computer-based education and digital resources.
License Requirements
The Computer Education license addition program at IU Southeast qualifies an educator to become a school technology coach. A teacher may be licensed after completing 15 hours and passing the required state exams. Kentucky teachers also have the opportunity to complete a 24-credit-hour program for a Rank 1.

Assessment Requirements for the Computer Education License
The performance-based assessment reviews candidate progress toward meeting standards at three points during the program. Check with the Graduate Advisor or License Advisor for most recent assessment evaluation rubrics. Petition for any exceptions should be approved and on file with the SOE Graduate Studies Director. Failure to do so could result in delays or discontinuation of program completion.
Major Specific Requirements
Students enrolled in the M.S.Ed. program are required to take 9 credit hours (3 courses) from the Education Content Component (refer to course list above.)
Upgrade to a master's degree
You can choose to add your computer education license to your Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) degree, and/or you can add/take those courses while you are pursuing your M.S.Ed. degree.
Admission Process
- Candidates are responsible for; access and installation of adequate computer hardware, required IUWare software, and other course specific free applications
- Candidates must be familiar with and have access to a broadband Internet connection at home, work, or at IU Southeast in order to complete coursework and maintain communication with their instructors.
- Candidates are responsible for adjusting their personal schedules to complete requirements.
- Candidates can take W540 only after having completed all other licensure courses successfully.
- All candidates are required to pass the Licensure specific computer competency test.
A two-year gap in coursework will require a new application for re-admission into any graduate program, and a mandatory meeting with a program advisor. The re-admitted candidate must then comply with any new program requirements, if any.
The IU Southeast School of Education accepts applications on a rolling basis. Applications are accepted anytime and reviewed up until ten days before the term begins.
- Carefully review all admission requirements for your program of interest. You are required to fill out the Advising Form and email it to Dr. Lisa Hoffman lhh@ius.edu. She will confirm receipt of the form, may ask additional information or request a phone conversation with you. If necessary, a meeting will be scheduled. For questions about the Master of Science in Education with a major in elementary education, contact Dr. Lisa Hoffman at lhh@ius.edu or (812) 941-2137. You may request to meet in person for advising.
- Complete online application. A $40 graduate application fee is assessed when applying to the program. If a previous graduate application fee was paid the fee may be waived.
- The online application will prompt you for a brief personal statement and will ask you to upload a copy of current teaching license or statement of eligibility, if applicable for your program.
- Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A 2.5 GPA for all undergraduate course work, 3.0 GPA for all graduate course work is required.
