Academic Advising Certificate
IU Online’s Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising offers instruction in the skills and theories needed for a career in academic advising.
As a student in this program, you study the foundational theories related to student and adult development. You learn techniques and tools to guide students in their academic journey and to create an equitable and inclusive environment for all. You learn to distinguish between the characteristics, needs, and experiences of various student populations, and o develop your own personal approach to advising.
The certificate can be a good fit for:
- Graduates who want to work in higher education but possibly not the field in which they are earning their degrees;
- Graduates who want to add another facet to their degree;
- Advisors who have not completed professional training in the higher education context.
Required Courses
Coursework includes the following:
- academic advising
- a higher education administration course
- a counseling course
- a course in student and adult development
- a practicum with field experience
ALL courses are listed here and are 3 credit hours each. You will select from among these courses to meet degree requirements.

- EDUC-U 560 Internship in Student Affairs
The certificate hours may be used toward the Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in elementary or secondary education if a licensed teacher chooses to apply to the M.S.Ed. program at a later date.
Admission Process
Applicants seeking the graduate certificate in academic advising must first apply for admission to the IU Southeast Graduate Program in the School of Education.

Advising
This 100 percent online program is taught by faculty from IU Bloomington, IUPUI and IU Southeast. Advising is through the campus where you are enrolled, and your area of concentration.
