At IU Southeast, “advising” is defined as academic advising of students regarding requirements for degrees, course selection, and similar academic matters. “Counseling” is defined as assisting students with career decisions, personal programs, human relationships, and similar personal matters.

Academic Advising

All students are strongly encouraged to consult with an advisor each semester before registering at IU Southeast. Advisors will review academic requirements, discuss prospective courses, and consider how those courses fit into the overall academic plan. They may also discuss the relationship between academic plans and prospective careers. Academic services, policies, and procedures vary depending on major and the student’s academic level. For specific information, visit the Academic Advising Center.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation offers a variety of services essential to students’ successful transition to the intellectual, cultural, and social climate of college. New students become more familiar with their new college environment, meet faculty in their academic school, and learn about opportunities that will enhance their college experience. New students also receive timely and relevant academic and student support services information, meet with academic advisors, and receive assistance with initial registration for courses. First-year and transfer students, after being admitted, may find information about “next steps” on the Campus Life New Students website.

Students who are having difficulty with course work should be directed to the Student Success Center located in University Center South, room 203.
